Explore the Castle and Grounds

Knaresborough Castle is a former Royal residence and still owned by the King today. It once a stronghold of Mediaeval Kings and administrative heart of the 'Forest of Knaresborough'.

The grounds are free to enter and offer a great viewpoint over the town's picturesque viaduct. Look out for the medieval inspired Christmas tree in the Castle Keep.

Visitors can also pay to enter the Courthouse Museum and Keep between 10am and 3.30pm on Saturday 6 December and Sunday 7 December. There is also a small tourist information centre and gift shop in the Courthouse Museum.

The Castle top also offers an excellent viewpoint for our firework finale at 4.30pm on Sunday 7 December.

To reach the Castle, Courthouse museum and Tourist Information Centre from the market square, walk down Castlegate, which is the road between the Market Tavern pub and Aurum hairdressers. Turn right by Brymor ice cream and Castlegate Dental to reach the entrance to the castle grounds. There are also public toilets here and you will find a large tourist information map on the exterior wall.
